Black ink for tribal

Since Starbrite no longer makes Black Magic, is there an ink that covers like that? I tried Tat Wax's tribal black - SUCKED! Luckily, it's a night sky on my husband and will 'fix' it with darkened colors.
THANKS!

I'm not an expert

I am by far NOT an expert in any field. I rely on those that have been 'around the block' or just around longer than myself. I do rely on my ex, who has gone to Washington D. C. to create federal regulations, when it comes to hazardous materials, including biological hazards.

I have learned lots on my own. Some of the things I've been taught by my more experienced elders have turned out to be lies, untruths, or not the "only" way. (notice I said some not all)

I will continue to tell those who say, "You're the expert," when talking about their tattoo, "I am not an expert, it is YOUR body, and YOUR tattoo."

Will I ever be an 'expert'? God I hope not! Most experts, those I've met and those I only have read their publications don't seem to keep up with what's actually happening. (notice I said most, not all) In various situations, I've found the expert's advise is so far off.

Even this 40 year old dog will learn new tricks. I will repeat what I've read, been told, taught, etc. with references if I remember them. (since I am old) because I've seen too much talent and knowledge shut out and ignored in ALL fields.

What are your favorites? I've run into Kumo Suri for lining and shading, One by Kingpin for super black tribal. I've stuck with Starbrite, due to the fact they have been around forever. Wondering what ink 'pops' for new school, blends for realistic, makes you happy. Just out of curiousity.
Thanks ahead of time!

Amazing Pin-Up/Portrait Artist on West Coast??

I've been looking for the right person to do a pin-up for over a year and haven't had too much luck. I want to connect with someone who can capture the sexiness of a 40s style pin-up featuring my wife. I've got a great artist that I've worked with on a couple of other pieces (Teresa at Staircase in Santa Cruz) but protraits just aren't her thing so I need to find a master pin-up artist.

Any ideas? I'm open to travelling just about anywhere so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hihi =)

I have a tattoo already on my lower back, and my original intent was that it was the first of two parts. Finances have said SCREW YOU! since I got the first one but I'm still wanting to finish part two, which is the bigger part (full back). Problem is I've moved cross country since I got the first one so going back to my original artist is easier said than done. What I'm looking for is a) some design help and b) a good, trusted, talented artist in the Harrisburg/Philadelphia PA area. I'm IN Harrisburg but considering what I'm doing, I'm willing to travel a bit to find someone who can do this right.

Help?

The term "tattoo artist"- does it mean ANYthing? Probably not.... read on

This is a topic that comes up regularly, both online and in the studio, and I'm wondering what others think of my take on things.

This is from a post I wrote in another tattooing tribe, in response to someone's question about the phrase "tattoo artist", and if it is so misused, "why not call them artists who tattoo?".....

My response....

It WOULD be "more accurate".... but if and ONLY if, in fact, it IS an "artist who tattoos", WHICH, in point of fact, would describe only a small percentage of those tattooing for a living, not counting "hobbyists" (read: "scratchers")...... hence my issue with using the term "artist" at ALL when describing "tattooers" (yeah, I admit there ARE artists working as tattooers, and many tattooers making "art", but I can't see through to call anyone who can make a decent tattoo outline "an artist", since it would be little different than saying "anyone who can make a decent line drawing of a Happy Face with a ball-point pen is an artist", as opposed to "doodler" or "illustrator" or "four year old child").

Then there's the many SKILLED craftsmen and women whose Craft is "tattooing", if you wanna complicate things, since they're often DAMNED GOOD tattooers in their own rights, yet can't "make art" to save their lives (thousands of tattooers working in production/street/flash shops do wonderful, expertly executed tattoos every day, but since we're splitting hairs, without properly composed and executed "custom work", "creation" and "applying skill and knowledge in making original art" then it's "Craft and technical skill", not "art").

Throughout the industry, I figure maybe one in twenty -5% - or as many as one in 10 -10%- of tattooers I've ever been aware of might be truly "artists" in ANY medium, tattooing included (which does NOT automatically say that only 5-10% of tattooers are any good, since I thin LOTS of good tattooers make great tattoos without ever making "art"). However, since the rest of the non-tattooing population (and many tattooers, too) use the term "tattoo artist" to mean "anyone with a tattoo machine and a bottle of ink who can figure out that the pointy end goes in the skin", I'll stick to "tattooer", since that's EXACTLY what we all are, and it eliminates the desire to say to 90-95% of other tattooers "you ain't an artist... stop calling yourself one".

Being an artist- be it one who tattoos or not- is another thing entirely, and most people understand that. I just wish people wouldn't assign the term "artist" to describe people who aren't even good "illustrators", let alone all these people with nothing more elaborate than a shitty "spaghetti tribal" armband tattoo- making them experts, of course- who insist on saying things like "my tattoo artist is one of the top three tattooers in the state.... no, really! It's official" (a claim I heard last month about some local scratcher), since that obviously isn't true for all the tattooers about whom I've heard folks make this claim- or some variation thereof.....

Again, I'm splitting hairs here, but one of the reasons so FEW tattooers I've ever spoken with in my years on the international tattoo convention scene EVER refer to themselves or others as "tattoo artists" is they know the term is meaningless, due to the misuse of the term on a daily basis by folks who are ALSO prone to call a tattoo machine a "tattoo gun", who blame "bad ink" for their shitty tattoos instead of the tattooer who fucked them up or their piss-poor aftercare, who describe "custom work" as "freehand", and get bent out of shape when you tell them that the "full sleeve tribal" they want is going to take longer and cost cost more than a full sleeve of realistic work would have cost because "it's not like it's complicated or anything". The term means NOTHING to most of us who bust our asses to make art, be it tattoo art or any another kind.

Look, if we want to define "art" and "artist" as liberally as people seem to these days, then ANYONE with a tattoo machine is a "tattoo artist".... which is exactly why I don't use the term. See if you all can't get comfortable saying "tattooer" instead of "tattoo artist". See if you don't feel like you're being a LOT more honest with people when you do.

TRIBAL TATTOOS: CULTURAL FAD & CULTURAL TRAVESTY!

TRIBAL TATTOOS: CULTURAL FAD & CULTURAL TRAVESTY!
(C) Wade MacMorrighan, 2007

Okay, we've all seen 'em...the ripped guys with a tribal armband tattood around their bicep! So far as tattoo as an expression of art nd consciousness goes (or lack there of, as I shall later go into) this one's been WAY over done!

Now, I'll be the first one to admit that if a sexy man with pecs of steel and arms with muscles ontop of his muscles walks into a room witha tribal tattoo there'd be something about it that would simply make him, shall we say, "more *appealing*"! But, that's one of the facets of tribal tattoos as an art--it's supposed to look goo on the body, and take into context the shape and natural lines of one's body; even accentuating them.

But, far too many men and women are thoughtlessly getting tattoos without understanding the significance of the ink they bear-- this very well may have the potential to bastardize a respective culture! I wouldn't be opposed of requiring tattoo artists to mandate that their prospective customers know what their are getting--if it's tribal, or froim some other culture-- and what it means, or each respective shape or line consciously reflect in the culture from which is stems.

This is why more folks ought to spend hours of time studying what they want, and how best to express it as a form of "sacred geomotry", if you will. Look to one's own culture, first, if there are any extent pagan/tribval motifs that have survived, and apply specific images and ifeograms in the make-up oif your tattoo, to best express what it is that the tribal tattoo is meant to signify! After all, tattoos often marked a rite de passage; it was a journey because it originally took many days, rather than hours, for ancient tattoos to be applied. But, I digress...

Lets say that, for the sake of argument, you are a Gay man (this is an original idea of my own) that you want a tribal tattoo as a symbol demarcating Gay Pride. What choices are there? Well, there's an inverted piunk triangle that our Nazi pursecutors demanded we wear. But, I would like a butterfly for a variety or reasons constructed out of a tribal motif. Now, the reasons for this is that the butterfly often represents liminality and transformation or fluidity from one state to another. It is also an obsolete sign for Gay Liberation: during the 1970s lavender butterflies were used as such symbols, but I have never seen any, or found this reference on-line. Red butterflies were also thought to be witches in early-modern Britain, as well as a symbol for the soul. Even in Spain a derogatory term for a Gay man [mariposa] translates as "butterfly".

However, the lines and motifs that yield the eventual tribal tattoo ought to reflect a deeper meaning and belief that incorporate various shapes and lines of significance. What should such a tattoo imply by way of the incorporated motif? Well, Pride and Courage, as well as Love, or incorporating symbols associated with Protection and Defense, for instance. But, instead of just leaching off of other disparate cultures with no connection [such as Native American meets Greek and pseudo-Celtic] choose some motifs from a culture that has significance to you--personally!

This, however, is my own personal philosophy. YMMV! Though, I pine for the days when a tribal tattoo actually MEANT something--we need more tribal customs within our own social networks or communities. Moreover, get an inspired tattoo to mark a relationship one might hav with a respective deity--I am ALL in favour of religious contemporary Pagan tattoos! Still...one fascet I desperately want to thoroughly investigate is the evidence for ancient tattoos from various cultures, particularly through Europe, and what they maight have looked like.

ISO Tattoo Ideogram Resources!

Hey guys, I am in the process of designing (more-or-less by culling visual expressions of an ideal) a personal tattoo for Gay Pride of next year, so...bare with me a min.! First off, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a selection of books with which one can research symbology and ideograms?

Now...what I have planned is a butterfly rendered in a tribal motif! But, because it bugs me to see other cultures getting leached off of or folks calling "tribal tattoos" "tribal" when they bare no meaning and is merely art, I want it to be repleat with meaning, containing shapes and symbols through the intersecting lines denoting such things as courage, or Pride, etc. (Of course, I will need to meditate on what "Gay Pride" means to me, make a list, and then look for symbols that both historically express that idea through a symbol, etc.) Sadly, none of my own book or extent resources have availed themselves to my necessity at the moment.

Although, the butterfly itself does bear significance: it represents beauty; was believed to be the soul in many cultures; while red butterflies were thought to be witches that have shape-shifted; and it's transformation represents liminality and transformation (it's the only creature known to be able to completely alter its DNA); and during the 1970s (though I have foud no surviving images and references to this) lavender butterflies were symbols of Gay Liberation; even in Spain a derrogative word for a gay man in *mariposa*, which means "butterfly"; I also think the butterfly may have been a symbol for Eros who was the especial Patron of same-sex desire in Greece. I was also thinking of having two black dots diametrically opposed incorporated into the motif to represent the balance of the posative and the negative; the light and dark; as well as the masculine and the feminine, etc. Often one will note relatively "meaningless" free-standing dots in neo-tribal tattoos, so I thought I would borrow from this and impune it with some *real* meaning!

So...I was wondering if anyone might have any ideas for source-references for symbols and ideograms, etc.? Sadly, I haven't been able to find much on-line, such as through Symbols.Com (my usualy "go to" source).

Tattoo Symbolism & Ideology...

Hey guys, as I may have mentioned before I am in the process of culling various ideas for a butterfly tattoo on the left-side of my chest rendered in the neo-tribal style (though, it's gotta' have the sexy lines this particular style's so well known for--I was watching a programme on TV last night dealig with a tribal tattoo competition, and one tribal piece simply took my breath away!). However, I want it to have some very real meaning, besides just being the modern, meaningless, tribal motifs that are so popular. So...I'd like to have the lines that constitute the piece to hold various significant associations. Ya' know what I mean? For example, an ideogram incorporated that means "pride", "esteem" or "protection", "courage" and "strength", etc... Sadly, my usual "go to" site is fairly useless, proving to be pretty narrow: http://symbols.com But.........because I am astute (at least I think so, anyway!), I'm also interested in why a symbol means what it means, or from where it may have evolved. So, I was wondering if anyone might have know of any good resource-type books that are pretty thorough examinations of symbols, their traditional meanings and their evolutions, etc. Anyone know of any that'd be worth my while? As for my tatoo-idea in question, I'd like to keep any incorporated symbols within a Northern, European, etc. stream or "cultural" environment. Of course, one of these days I shall have to set down with pen and paper and write a list of "Key Words" detailing what Gay Pride means to me. (The reason I desire a butterfly is becayse it represents not only witches [who were thought to shape-shift into red butterflies], but the soul and liminality or transformation; however, in the 70s lavender butterflies were ideograms of Gay Liveration, and in Spain a derrogatory term for Gay men [mariposa] translates as "butterfly"--I know it's supposed to be derrogatory, but I still think it's pretty!) Of course, before I get this tattoo I really want to hit my local gymn--hard! Hey, it's cheaper than pec. implants! LOL...

Take Care,
Wade

I have a small UV tattoo on my shoulder that I had done on a whim. I wanted to see if I scarred, and if the ink fades. I love it and would like a large back piece with color and UV combined. I don't know any artists in the SF Bay Area who work with UV ink? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I need someone to teach me to tattoo!!!!!

Hi, my name is khalila, and I need a teacher.
I have always drawn to express my emotions, as an outlet when i am angry, sad or happy!! I also paint alot and do other styles of art as well. It is definetely a life passion for me, and i have always continued to create while working other dead end jobs, and have always dreamed of doing art for a living.
About a month ago i decided to try tattooing and have been researching as much as i can about every aspect of it including the safety aspect, and different techniques and styles. I have done a couple on myself and my boyfriend ( who is stoked!) but the only way i am going to make it is to have someone teach me!!! I am NOT trying to go into this uneducated and i am aware af how hard and long an apprenticeship can be, but to me it is sooo worth it to be able to eventually do this for a living and to learn from someone who inspires me.
Feel free to critisize me if you want or even give some encouragement. I just decided to put it out there and see what comes back.
Thankyou!!!!

hey guys. im here looking for answers and or friends that can help me learn about the tattoo industry. When i gain an apprenticeship, what sort of hours do apprentices work? I know it depends on the shop, but maybe someone who has taught somebody already could tell me of their experiace. I know, if you are an artist you are probably tired of hearing the same question-"Will you take me as an apprentice?". Im annoyed listening to myself say it!!! But if I really want this then i guess i'll have to get sneared @ and told no...a thousand times. Im not a wannabe scratcher- im willing to work hard for sure....One last thing, can any pros out there give me any advice on what might set me (or my portfolio) apart form others when i go begging around for this??? Tattoo artists are guarded bunch, and i just need to wedge myself in.........

Tattoo Magick Story //////////// Blane

I was tattooing this Angel on a guy's arm last week and he looked around my station at a variety of eclectic spiriual type aticles of a mystical nature one might say,and said , "hey , are you into some kind of Voodou or Magick , Witch kind of shit or something?"
I said yeah you might say that , but I dont like labels put on me . He said , "well , do a trick then , show me some magic"... I laughed and said that what and who I am is a way of life and being, but since he asked I would demonstrate with kind of a story , and this is what I told him :
Although I'm aware that all realizations revelations , enlightenment , are latent in my own heart , and that one need seek no further ultimately than the spark of Life ablaze within their own being . I also know that everyone else outside of this personality ans vehicle called Blane is really a component of my Real self that I seek to integrate , and that we are all inseparably connected to the greater One that is all. So if I went to Nepal and met with the Rinpoche I would be connecting with a Higher aspect of myself that was always there anyway but I just wasn't aware of that part of my being . Like forgetting a tender moment from childhood connected to the scent of a flower . 40 yrs go by and the memory of this flower is all but erased , and one day you walk through a garden thousands of miles from your home and someone walks up to you with this same flower , you smell it and the distractions and drudgery of 40 yrs falls away and in that moment you are an innocent child again , surrendering to the wonder and bliss of just being alive . And you look at this person with unconditional love and gratitude , enrapt in this eternal moment which transcends time and space and all definitions , and know that you have been completed in another , who is really a reintroduction to the Real you .............Selah

About the definition of "Magick":

This was a designation and redefinition that was coined by Aleister Crowley in the late 1890's to distinguish stage "magic" from the Art of "Magick" used for the purposes of conscious /intentional human spiritual transformation and metamorphosis by utilizing the methods and techniques of the Western Mystery Traditions , to wit- the Rosicrucian manuscripts , then the adapted system of The Golden Dawn , which incorporated systems from Egypt , India , Tibet , European Druidry, Christian Gnosticism , Sufism , the Kabballah/Tarot , and indigenous forms of Witchcraft and Shamanism , and brought it all together to create a coherent grade oriented system for practical application to achieve the ends I have already stated above in the beginning of this paragraph. Just in case anyone was wondering ...........Blessings ......Blane

Tattooing Tips?

Hello all. I've begun my journey into the world of tattooing recently. My friend got me started by sending me some needles and ink. I was hooked. I'm very interested in using tattoo as a part of ritual. Permanently altering the body benefits from a healthy sense of respect and possibility.

I do the tattoos by hand. The process is slow and meditative.

I'm working on piece around my arm, a snake eating its tail, ouroboros with a hindi inscription on the under side of the arm, Sub Kooch MilAga, Everything is possible.

I've done the outline with a 7mag. Maybe it was a bit much, but my other option was a 5RL, and I find the mag gives me smoother lines.

I'm very new to this and would appreciate some help/feedback/antecdotes/whatever.

I believe my next step would be to shade the snake. I really want it to be as realistic as possible. Does anyone have any tips on shading to give the illusion of three dimensions via the media of ink on skin?

Texturing...
I want the snake to be as realistic as possible, so for me that entails tattooing indivicual scales onto the snake. Is that a common practice in the tattoo world? Can anyone offer any of their knowledge on the texturing of legless reptiles?

There are some pictures in my gallery if anyone is interested. Thanks

I'm really enjoying tattooing. It's a wicked practice. Peace

Mercury in tattoo ink - advice on what to do

This seems as good as place as any to post this query, so here goes.

About 5 months ago I had a small maple leaf tattooed on my right hand in red ink. This took a long time to begin healing (one done in green on the other hand the same day healed normally). Initially, we thought it was an allergy to the red ink which is common (but I haven't had problems with red ink before). After some weeks, I went back to the tattooist and she admitted that the ink she had used had contained mercury and this explained the slow healing and unusual swelling. 5 months later, and the swelling is as painful as ever (especially during the evenings) - in fact, it looks and feels more like a branding since it is very raised above the skin.

What advice should a good tattoo artist give someone who has had this kind of experience?

TATTOO
Tattooing is one of the oldest art forms on the planet, dating to prehistoric times and cave dwellers who often created tattooes as part of ritual practices linked to shamanism, protection, connection with their gods, and embuing them with magica powers. Early tattooing was used to symbolize the fertility of the earth and of womankind, preservation of life after death, the sacredness of chieftainship and other cultural factors.
Tattooed markings on skin and incised markings in clay provide some of the earliest evidence that humans have long practiced a wide range of body art. The written accounts of early European explorers also attest to the elaborate and widespread nature of tattooing in various parts of the world, providing an insight into traditions that had their origins deep in the past.
Marriage tattoos have been particularly popular to insure that you can find your lawful spouse or spouses in the afterlife, even if you have passed 'through the veil,' many years apart. Ancient Ainu marriage rites state that a woman who marries without first being tattooed, in the proper manner, commits a great sin and when she dies; she will go straight to God.
Tattooing as a rite of adulthood, or passage into puberty, was another common tattoo ritual. If a girl can't take the pain of tattooing, she is un-marriageable, because she will never be able to deal with the pain of child birth. If a boy cannot deal with the pain of his puberty tattoos, he is considered to be a bad risk as a warrior, and could become an outcast.
Since the dawn of tattooing, people have been marking themselves with the signs of their totem animals. On the outer level of meaning, they are trying to gain the strengths and abilities of the totem animal. On a more inner and mystical level, totem animals mean that the bearer has a close and mysterious relationship with this animal spirit as his guardian. Totem animal tattoos often double as clan or group markings. Modern dragon, tiger, and eagle tattoos often subconsciously fall into this category. My snake tattoos are examples of DNA and the human biogenetic experiment.
Another common practice was tattooing for health wherein the tattooing of a god was placed on the afflicted person, to fight the illness for them. An offshoot of tattooing for health is tattooing to preserve youth. Maori girls tattooed their lips and chin, for this reason. When an old Ainu lady's eyesight is failing, she can re-tattoo her mouth and hands, for better vision. This is still practiced today.
Tattoos for general good luck are found world-wide. A man in Burma who desires good luck will tattoo a parrot on his shoulder. In Thailand, a scroll representing Buddha in an attitude of meditation is considered a charm for good luck. In this charm, a right handed scroll is masculine and a left handed scroll is feminine. Today, in the West, you can see dice, spades, and Lady Luck tattoos, which are worn to bring luck.
History
Prehistoric Times
<http://physorg.com/news75656360.html>
Archaeologists find 2,500-year-old mummy in Mongolia, tattoos, blond hair and a felt hat <http://physorg.com/news75656360.html>
PhysOrg - August 25, 2006
Tattooing has been a Eurasian practice since Neolithic times. "Otzi the Iceman", <oetzi.html>dated circa 3300 BC, exhibits possible therapeutic tattoos (small parallel dashes along lumbar and on the legs). Tarim Basin (West China, Xinjiang) revealed several tattooed mummies of a Western (Western Asian/European) physical type. Still relatively unknown (the only current publications in Western languages are those of J P. Mallory and V H. Mair, The Tarim Mummies, London, 2000), some of them could date from the end of the 2nd millennium BCE.
The world's most spectacular tattooed mummy was discovered by Russian anthropologist Sergei Ivanovich Rudenko <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergei_Ivanovich_Rudenko> in 1948 during the excavation of a group of Pazyryk tombs about 120 miles north of the border between China and Russia.
These mummies were found in the High Altai Mountains of western and southern Siberia and date from around 2400 years ago. The tattoos on their bodies represent a variety of animals. The griffins and monsters are thought to have a magical significance but some elements are believed to be purely decorative. Altogether the tattoos are believed to reflect the status of the individual.
Three tattooed mummies (c. 300 BCE) were extracted from the permafrost of Altaï in the second half of the 20th century (the Man of Payzyrk, during the 1940s; one female mummy and one male in Ukok plateau, during the 1990s). Their tattooing involved animal designs carried out in a curvilinear style.

The Man of Pazyryk was also tattooed with dots that lined up along
the spinal column (lumbar region) and around the right ankle.
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pazyryk>
Pazyryk Mummies - Pazyryk Culture <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pazyryk>
The Pazyryks were formidable iron age horsemen and warriors who inhabited the steppes of Eastern Europe and Western Asia from the sixth through the second centuries BC. They left no written records, but Pazyryk artifacts are distinguished by a sophisticated level of artistry and craftsmanship. The Pazyryk tombs discovered by Rudenko were in an almost perfect state of preservation. They contained skeletons and intact bodies of horses and embalmed humans, together with a wealth of artifacts including saddles, riding gear, a carriage, rugs, clothing, jewelry, musical instruments, amulets, tools, and, interestingly, hash pipes, described by Rudenko as "apparatus for inhaling hemp smoke".
Also found in the tombs were fabrics from Persia and China, which the Pazyryks must have obtained on journeys covering thousands of miles. Rudenko's most remarkable discovery was the body of a tattooed Pazyryk chief: a thick-set, powerfully built man who had died when he was about 50. Parts of the body had deteriorated, but much of the tattooing was still clearly visible. The chief was elaborately decorated with an interlocking series of designs representing a variety of fantastic beasts.
The best preserved tattoos were images of a donkey, a mountain ram, two highly stylized deer with long antlers and an imaginary carnivore on the right arm. Two monsters resembling griffins decorate the chest, and on the left arm are three partially obliterated images which seem to represent two deer and a mountain goat.
On the front of the right leg a fish extends from the foot to the knee. A monster crawls over the right foot, and on the inside of the shin is a series of four running rams which touch each other to form a single design. The left leg also bears tattoos, but these designs could not be clearly distinguished. In addition, the chief's back is tattooed with a series of small circles in line with the vertebral column. This tattooing was probably done for therapeutic reasons. Contemporary Siberian tribesmen still practice tattooing of this kind to relieve back pain.
No instruments specifically designed for tattooing were found, but the Pazyryks had extremely fine needles with which they did miniature embroidery, and these were undoubtedly used for tattooing In the summer of 1993 another tattooed Pazyryk mummy was discovered in Siberia's Umok plateau. It had been buried over 2,400 years ago in a casket fashioned from the hollowed-out trunk of a larch tree. On the outside of the casket were stylized images of deer and snow leopards carved in leather. Shortly after burial the grave had apparently been flooded by freezing rain and the entire contents of the burial chamber had remained frozen in permafrost.
The body was that of a young woman whose arms had been tattooed with designs representing mythical creatures like those on the previously discovered Pazyryk mummy. She was clad in a voluminous white silk dress, a long crimson woolen skirt and white felt stockings.
On her head was an elaborate headdress made of hair and felt - the first of its kind ever found intact. Also discovered in the burial chamber were gilded ornaments, dishes, a brush, a pot containing marijuana, and a hand mirror of polished metal on the wooden back of which was a carving of a deer. Six horses wearing elaborate harnesses had been sacrificed and lay on the logs which formed the roof of the burial chamber.
Considering the number of tattooed mummies which have been discovered, it is apparent that tattooing was widely practiced throughout the ancient world and was associated with a high level of artistic endeavor. The imagery of ancient tattooing is in many ways similar to that of modern tattooing.
All of the known Pazyryk tattoos are images of animals. Animals are the most frequent subject matter of tattooing in many cultures and are traditionally associated with magic, totemism, and the desire of the tattooed person to become identified with the spirit of the animal. Tattoos which have survived on mummies suggest that tattooing in prehistoric times had much in common with modern tattooing, and that tattooing the world over has profound and universal psychic origins.

Tattooing in Japan (Jomon Period)
Tattooing for spiritual and decorative purposes in Japan is thought to extend back to at least the Jomon or paleolithic period (approximately 10,000 BCE) and was widespread during various periods for both the Japanese and the native Ainu. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ainu_people> Chinese visitors observed and remarked on the tattoos in Japan (300 BCE).
In Japanese the word used for traditional designs or those that are applied using traditional methods is irezumi ("insertion of ink"), while "tattoo" is used for non-Japanese designs. The earliest evidence of tattooing in Japan comes from figurines called dogu. Most of these date to 3000 years ago and display similar markings to the tattooed mouths found among the women of the Ainu (the Indigenous people of Japan).
Tattoo enthusiasts may refer to tattoos as tats, ink, art or work, and to tattooists as artists. The latter usage is gaining support, with mainstream art galleries holding exhibitions of tattoo designs and photographs of tattoos. Tattoo designs that are mass-produced and sold to tattoo artists and studios and displayed in shop are known as flash.
Irezumi <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irezumi>

China <china.html>
Tattooing has also been featured prominently in one of the Four Classic Novels in Chinese literature, Water Margin, in which at least three of the 108 characters, Lu Zhi Chen, Shi Jin, and Yan Chen are described as having tattoos covering nearly the whole of their bodies. In addition, Chinese legend has it that the mother of Yue Fei, the most famous general of the Song Dynasty, tattooed the words jin zhong bao guo on his back with her sewing needle before he left to join the army, reminding him to "repay his country with pure loyalty".

Egypt <egypt.html>
Tattooing has actually been practiced since the time of the ancient Egyptians and is common throughout the world. In 1891, archaeologists discovered the mummified remains of Amunet <http://wiki.bmezine.com/index.php/Egyptian_Mummies> - Dynasty XI, Egypt, c. 4040 - 3994 years ago. This mummy was found at Thebes. Amunet (various spellings) was a priestess of Hathor. <hathor.html> This female mummy displayed several lines and dots and dashes tattooed on her body, aligned in abstract geometrical patterns.
These dot-and-dash patterns have been seen for many years throughout Egypt. This pattern and skill of tattoo may have been borrowed from the Nubians. The art of tattoo developed during the Middle Kingdom and flourished beyond. The evidence to date suggests that this art form was restricted to women only, and usually these women were associated with ritualistic practice. These mummies give us site into how long this art form has been practiced and how their art was displayed. From continent to continent this art form has developed and transformed. Through the Egyptian eyes to other cultures, tattoo is something that satisfies various needs and interest.
A second mummy also found depicted this same type of line pattern (the dancer). This mummy also had a cicatrix pattern over her lower pubic region. In the figure to the right you can see the various patterns as they are displayed on the body. The various design patterns also appeared on several figurines that date to the Middle Kingdom, these figurines have been labeled the "Brides of Death." The figurines are also associates with the goddess Hathor. All tattooed Egyptian mummies found to date are female. The location of the tattoos on the lower abdomen are thought to be linked to fertility.
Egyptian tattooing was someitmes related to the sensual, erotic, and emotional side of life, and all these themes are found in tattooing today.

Egypt 1800's

Middle East <middle_east.html>
An archaic practice in the Middle East involved people cutting themselves and rubbing in ash during a period of mourning after an individual had died. It was a sign of respect for the dead and a symbol of reverence and a sense of the profound loss for the newly departed; and it is surmised that the ash that was rubbed into the self-inflicted wounds came from the actual funeral pyres that were used to cremate bodies. In essence, people were literally carrying with them a reminder of the recently deceased in the form of tattoos created by ash being rubbed into shallow wounds cut or slashed into the body, usually the forearms.

Tattooing in the South Pacific
The term "tattoo" is traced to the Tahitian tatu or tatau, meaning to mark or strike, the latter referring to traditional methods of applying the designs.
The earliest evidence of tattooing in the Pacific is in the form of this pottery shard which is approximately 3000 years old. The Lapita face shows dentate (pricked) markings on the nose, cheeks and forehead, suggestive of the technique of tattoo application.
Unique tattooed face depicted in 3 dimensions on a Lapita

pottery sherd was recently found on Boduna Island.
<maori.html>
Maori of New Zealand <maori.html> Crystalinks
Between 1766 and 1779, Captain James Cook made three voyages to the South Pacific, the last trip ending with Cook's death in Hawaii in February, 1779. When Cook and his men returned home to Europe from their voyages to Polynesia, they told tales of the 'tattooed savages' they had seen.
Cook's Science Officer and Expedition Botanist, Sir Joseph Banks, returned to England with a tattoo. Banks was a highly regarded member of the English aristocracy and had acquired his position with Cook by putting up what was at the time the princely sum of some ten thousand pounds in the expedition. In turn, Cook brought back with him a tattooed Tahitian chief, whom he presented to King George and the English Court. Many of Cook's men, ordinary seamen and sailors, came back with tattoos, a tradition that would soon become associated with men of the sea in the public's mind and the press of the day. In the process sailors and seamen re-introduced the practice of tattooing in Europe and it spread rapidly to seaports around the globe.
It was in Tahiti aboard the Endeavour, in July of 1769, that Cook first noted his observations about the indigenous body modification and is the first recorded use of the word tattoo. In the Ship's Log, Cook recorded this entry: "Both sexes paint their bodies, "Tattow," as it is called in their Language. This is done by inlaying the colour of black under their skins, in such a manner as to be indelible. This method of Tattowing is a painful operation, especially the Tattowing of their buttocks. It is performed but once in their lifetimes.
The Concept of Tattooing Spreads
The British Royal Court must have been fascinated with the Tahitian chief's tattoos, because the future King George V had himself inked with the 'Cross of Jerusalem' when he traveled to the Middle East in 1892. He also received a dragon on the forearm from the needles of an acclaimed tattoo master during a visit to Japan. George's sons, The Duke of Clarence and The Duke of York were also tattooed in Japan while serving in the British Admiralty, solidifying what would become a family tradition.
Taking their sartorial lead from the British Court, where Edward VII followed George V's lead in getting tattooed; King Frederick IX of Denmark, the King of Romania, Kaiser Wilhelm II, King Alexander of Yugoslavia and even Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, all sported tattoos, many of them elaborate and ornate renditions of the Royal Coat of Arms or the Royal Family Crest. King Alfonso of modern Spain also had a tattoo.
Tattooing spread among the upper classes all over Europe in the nineteenth century, but particularly in Britain where it was estimated in Harmsworth Magazine in 1898 that as many as one in five members of the gentry were tattooed. There, it was not uncommon for members of the social elite to gather in the drawing rooms and libraries of the great country estate homes after dinner and partially disrobe in order to show off their tattoos. Aside from her consort Prince Albert, there are persistent rumours that Queen Victoria had a small tattoo in an undisclosed 'intimate' location; Denmark's king Frederick was filmed showing his tattoos taken as a young sailor. Winston Churchill's mother, Lady Randolph Churchill, not only had a tattoo of a snake around her wrist, which she covered when the need arose with a specially crafted diamond bracelet, but had her nipples pierced as well. Carrying on the family tradition, Winston Churchill was himself tattooed. In most western countries tattooing remains a subculture identifier, and is usually performed on less-often exposed parts of the body.
Pre-Christian Germanic Celtic <celts.html> and other central and northern European tribes were often heavily tattooed, according to surviving accounts. The pictures were famously tattooed (or scarified) with elaborate dark blue woad (or possibly copper for the blue tone) designs. Julius Caesar described these tattoos in Book V of his Gallic Wars (54 BCE).
Ahmad ibn Fadlan also wrote of his encounter with the Scandinavian Rus' tribe in the early 10th century, describing them as tattooed from "fingernails to neck" with dark blue "tree patterns" and other "figures."
During the gradual process of Christianization in Europe, tattoos were often considered remaining elements of paganism and generally legally prohibited. According to Robert Graves in his book The Greek Myths tattooing was common amongst certain religious groups in the ancient Mediterranean world, which may have contributed to the prohibition of tattooing in Leviticus.
The Greeks <greece.html> learned tattooing from the Persians. Tattooing is mentioned in accounts by Plato, Aristophanes, Julius Caesar and Herodotus. Tattoos were generally used to mark slaves and punish criminals.
The Romans <rome.html> adopted tattooing from the Greeks. In the 4th century, the first Christian emperor of Rome banned the facial tattooing of slaves and prisoners. In 787, Pope Hadrian prohibited all forms of tattooing.
In the 18th century, many French sailors returning from voyages in the South Pacific had been elaborately tattooed. In 1861, French naval surgeon, Maurice Berchon, published a study on the medical complications of tattooing. After this, the Navy and Army banned tattooing within their ranks.
The ancient Celts didn't have much in the way of written record keeping, consequently, there is little evidence of their tattooing remaining. Most modern Celtic designs are taken from the Irish Illuminated Manuscripts, of the 6th and 7th centuries. This is a much later time period than the height of Celtic tattooing. Designs from ancient stone and metal work are more likely to be from the same time period as Celtic tattooing.
In England, tattooing flourished in the 19th century and became something of a tradition in the British Navy. In 1862, the Prince of Wales received his first tattoo - a Jerusalem cross - after visiting the Holy Land. In 1882, his sons, the Duke of Clarence and the Duke of York (later King George V) were tattooed by the Japanese master tattooist, Hori Chiyo.

Tattooing in Central and South America
In Peru, tattooed Inca mummies <inca.html> dating to the 11th century have been found. Inca tattooing is characterized by bold abstract patterns which resemble contemporary tribal tattoo designs.
In Mexico and Central America, 16th century Spanish accounts of Mayan tattooing reveal tattoos to be a sign of courage. When Cortez and his conquistadors arrived on the coast of Mexico in 1519 they were horrified to discover that the natives not only worshipped devils in the form of statues and idols, but had somehow managed to imprint indelible images of these idols on their skin. The Spaniards, who had never heard of tattooing, recognized it at once as the work of Satan. As far as we know, only one Spaniard was ever tattooed by the Mayas. His name was Gonzalo Guerrero, and he is mentioned in several early histories of Mexico.

Tattooing in North America
In North America, early Jesuit accounts testify to the widespread practice of tattooing among Native Americans. Among the Chickasaw, outstanding warriors were recognized by their tattoos. Among the Ontario Iroquoians, elaborate tattoos reflected high status.
When Europeans first arived in the New World, they found Native Americans had a rich and ancient tattooing tradition. Capt. John Smith, of Virginia, mentioned Native American tattoos in his writing in the 1600's. Most tribes celebrated adulthood with tattoo puberty rites. Simple lines and geometric patterns were used and women often had lines extending from the lower lip onto the chin. Arapaho men tattooed three dots on their own chest, to prove their manhood. The Sioux, <sioux.html> among other tribes, believed that tattoos were necessary as a rite de passage into the spirit world. As a ghost warrior rode towards the "Many Lodges", he would encounter an old woman, who would demand to see his tattoos. If he had none to show, he and his horse were pushed off the path, and fell to earth, where they became aimlessly wandering spirits, who were eternally unsatisified. With the coming of Christianity, Native American tattooing disappeared and stories changed, until we only hear of the body painting of the American Indians.
In north-west America, Inuit <inuit.html> women's chins were tattooed to indicate marital status and group identity.
Tattooing is probably the most popular form of body adornment in America today. The designs can be small and discreet or large and obvious. Many people prefer discreet designs that can be concealed for certain occasions.

Religious Prohibitions
Jewish Positions
Orthodox Jews, in strict application of Halakha (Jewish Law), believe Leviticus 19:28 prohibits getting tattoos: Do not make gashes in your skin for the dead. Do not make any marks on your skin. I am God. One reading of Leviticus is to apply it only to the specific ancient practice of rubbing the ashes of the dead into wounds; but modern tattooing is included in other religious interpretations. Orthodox/Traditional Jews also point to Shulhan Arukh, Yoreh De'ah 180:1, that elucidates the biblical passage above as a prohibition against markings beyond the ancient practice, including tattoos. Maimonides concluded that regardless of intent, the act of tattooing is prohibited (Mishneh Torah, Laws of Idolatry 12:11).
Conservative Jews point to the next verse of the Shulhan Arukh (Yoreh De'ah 180:2), "If it [the tattoo] was done in the flesh of another, the one to whom it was done is blameless" this is used by they to say that tattooing yourself is different from obtaining a tattoo, and that the latter may be acceptable. Orthodox Jews disagree, but forced tatooing (like forced conversion) - as was the case during the Holocaust - is not considered a violation of Jewish Law. In another vein, cutting into the skin to perform surgery and temporary tattooing used for surgical purposes (eg: to mark the lines of an incision) are permitted in the Shulhan Arukh 180:3.
In most sectors of the religious Jewish community, having a tattoo does not prohibit participation, and one may be buried in a Jewish cemetery and participate fully in all synagogue ritual. In stricter sectors of the community, however, a community may have a psak (ruling or responsa with the weight of Halakha) that may forbid one's burial in a cemetary that comes under that ruling. Many of these communities, most notably the Modern Orthodox, accept laser removal of the tattoo as teshuvah (repentence), even when it is removed post-mortem.
Christian Positions
Some Christians believe that Leviticus 19:28 also applies to them, while others who disapprove of tattoos as a social phenomenon may rely on other scriptural arguments to make their point. Christians who believe that the religious doctrines of the Old Testament are superseded by the New Testament may still find explicit or implicit directives against tattooing in Christian scripture, in ecclesiastical law, or in church-originated social policy. The anti-tattooing position is not universal, however. The Christian Copts used tattoos as protective amulets.
Muslim Perspective
Following the Sharia (or Islamic Law), the majority of Muslims hold that tattooing is religiously forbidden (along with most other forms of 'permanent' physical modification). This view arises from Qur'anic verses and explicit references in the Prophetic Hadith which denounce those who attempt to change the creation of Allah, in what is seen as excessive attempts to beautify that which was already perfected. The human being is seen as having been ennobled by Allah, the human form viewed as created beautiful, such that the act of tattooing would be a form of self-mutilation. Some Muslims believe that though tattooing is not haraam (prohibited), it is nonetheless makruh (disdained). Muslims who received tattoos prior to conversion to Islam, however, face no special obstacle to religious observance. Henna patterns, however, are used among Muslim women, as distinguished from permanent tattooing.
-
A tattoo is a mark made by inserting pigment into the skin: in technical terms, tattooing is micro-pigment implantation. Tattoos may be made on human or animal skin. Tattoos on humans are a type of body modification, while tattoos on animals are most often used for identification. Tattooing has been a nearly ubiquitous human practice. The Ainu, the indigenous people of Japan, wore facial tattoos. Tattooing was widespread among Polynesian peoples, and in the Philippines, Borneo, Africa, North America, South America, Mesoamerica, Europe, Japan, Cambodia and China. Despite some taboos surrounding tattooing, the art continues to be popular all over the world. Tattoos - Complete Article <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tattoo> Wikipedia

My co-worker and I were talking today about inks, and the topic of star brite orange came up. Apparently on some folks it's fading to nothing within a few years. I know orange is often not very lightfast in other media (watercolor/oil). I have very little orange in my own collection of tattoos and was somewhat interested...if anyone has an older tattoo (three to five years) with Starbrite brand orange, how is it holding up? I have a few tiny bits on a peice three years old and it looks a little faded, but the whole peice has been needing a bit of touchup anyway. My co-worker mentioned that a few of his friends in another Chicago area shop have noticed this trend. Just curious.....

tattooing clients with medical issues

This has come up for me a lot recently and would like to do some knowledge sharing on the subject. I have several clients who are breast cancer survivors. One is also a close friend so I well knew her medical state and the timing of it all(which you don't always know with your clients off the street) She wants me to tattoo over the scar from her surgery and reclaim her body which I am all for but I wanted more health information about it. Firstly since I knew that she just went through chemo I wanted her to wait at the least 6 months to a year to give her immune system a chance to rebuild. She has been out of treatment for a year now and she still feels like her immunity is compromised, she catches colds easier etc...so we are still waiting. Meanwhile I did some research. She had some lymph nodes removed and sometimes has problems with lymphodema. I recommended that she not get tattooed on that side because of the potential problems with swelling from the lymphodema. She also had radiation in that area and according to my research radiation is worse than sun damage and changes the cellular structure of the skin. So I am recommending that she get her survivor tattoo somewhere else. Would love to hear from artists who have dealt with this.

I also recognise what it is like for women to feel that they are disfigured and how a tattoo can turn a scar into a beautiful thing thus increasing her mental health which has a positive effect on overall health. I'm trying to find a balance between helping someone reclaim their body while not further compramising their health.

i also have several clients who have fybromyalgia and other immmune disorders. What I have found is that very short appointments work best with them as they get tired quickly so I try to plan my tattoos to be done in small pieces which takes longer but is less taxing on them physically.

would like to hear feedback on not only cancer issues but also other medical conditions that people have encountered and your experience with how tattooing worked out with those people as i am trying to amass a database to refer to in conjunction with my intake forms and to advise clients accordingly.

It's official- I'm working again!!!!!!!

Well, after four years of recovering from two boken vertebrae, four herniated discs, and pretty considerable nerve damage, I've recovered to the point where I can work again. I've done some big pieces recently, and have made a point of working about once or twice a month for the last several years, so I'm not "out of practice" ;-).

A month ago, I walked into Skinsignea Tattoo in Eureka, California at 4th and S St., with a friend who wanted to look at piercing jewelry. Well, after seeing on the counter one of the better portfolios I've seen in several years, the tattooer belonging to that portfolio introduced me to his boss (if you want Old-School work with an Art Theory twist or great Japanese stuff, Henry is THE man to see on the North Coast of California).

Well, one thing led to another and we've arranged for me to begin work on weekends, to "see if things will work out."

I'm there on a trial basis for now, but hope to be permanent party pretty soon.

My hours are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 11-7 until the end of this Fall Semester at Humboldt State (I'm still a full-time college student during the week). Appointments are by deposit only (shop policy, and a good one), which means you either must be there in person, or I must have developed an e-mail relationship with you sufficient that you send me money in the mail.

E-mail appointments and discussions about arwork are welcome, and I enjoy discussing future work in letters, but without the deposit, I can't make promises. The other tattooers in the shop are already booked into the end of October and the middle of November respectively (It's not even September 1st yet!). I've been there for two weekends now, and my book is beginning to fill for the next several weeks, although I have spots available every weekend so far (some individual days are already booked- like next Saturday, but there's still some free time next weekend- I expect that to fill by Friday afternoon).

Take a look through my photo album and you'll see the kind of work I enjoy doing.

I look forward to your e-mails here at Tribe.net (use the messaging system) if you wish to discuss realistic tattooing, portraiture, Pin-Ups, wildlife imagery, large Japanese work, or other Black & Grey tattooing (I enjoy doing ALL kinds of work, but these are what I love the most).

Thanks to all who have stuck by me during my rehabilitation. Without you I could never have made it to this point. I love Humboldt, and I love tattooing, and now I can maybe stay in Humboldt, once I'm done with school this Winter. I certainly hope so.....

Love always

Need suggestions for that famous red ink

Can anyone please suggest what I should do about that famous subject: How can I put in the red ink without the client having problems about bumps. Every other ink flies in just fine with no healing problems. I've been using Intenze bright red. I tossed the first one I got last year, thinking it was an old batch, got a new one with a diff. batch number and STILL I am having problems. Can you please let me know if I'm putting the ink in too heavy or is it the ink? Thanks, MONK

Giving blood after getting a tatoo?

I am not sure if I have heard a urban myth...

I got a tatoo about a month ago. Someone told me last night that you have to wait a certain amount of time before you are able to give blood.

I am in Siagon, ( long story) but a firend of mine needs blood for her neices operation, and I have told them that I will help out. Can I? Is my blood okay, how long do I have to wait?

cheers

Is the money decent, market glutted, are folks friendly, who's the best shop,? etc....I've looked at some websites, but that barely scratches the surface. Thanks in advance for any responses.

Ok, i keep hearing this "myth", that there are still some old timers, or just artists that refuse to use mags....
I use the word myth loosely, so dont pound me on it.
And i have never met this old timer or artist that didnt, has anyone else?
I use both for different reasons, packing color in, and so on....
Does anyone know of anyone that doesnt use mags or flats?
And where is the final artwork?

Hey, My friends call me Deadly, I am a struggling artist, with a few clients, a couple of machines, and more balls than brains....I have been cutting on people for about a year now. My apprenticeship turned out to be a fucking nightmare, and i have since decided to go it alone. The posts in this forum look to be intelligent and insightful and I look forward to reading things from people that love the art as much as I do.

I really need a custom tattoo design..and an artist to create one for me

Ideas (all seperate tattoos, just use one idea for one tattoo):
1. something to do with being an aries (main color of red)
2. something with the word "Imagine" (any color, but maybe mostly pastels)
3. something with the infinity symbol ([link])

please, if anyone is interested, contact me at:
beansy89@yahoo.com or reply to this.

or if you know of any artists that would be willing to do this whom I could contact, that would be wonderful too

thankss.

Looking for a tatoo artist able to do dark angles that are more on the gothic end of things rather than the anime or cartoony end of things. I am looking to get a piece done on my chest that I have been waiting on for a while and am happy to pay for the art as long as it is good and useable if anyone is interested please e-mail me on tribe.
